It's All So Simple When You Know How

As a followup to my Dapper is teh suck entry, it appears that my egregiously slow system is known bug. Of course, it'd be better if it were a fixed bug, but at least it's trivially work-aroundable (echo 1 >/sys/module/processor/parameters/max_cstate -- down from it's default, on my system at least, of 8). Apparently there's some "issues" with the SMP-compiled kernel on uniprocessor systems, and hitting that tunable down masks the problem, whatever it is.

It's funny -- just the other day I was having a chat with the other sysadmin at a place I'm contracting at about the vagaries of SMP kernels on non-SMP machines, and he was amazed that you could have a modern system that didn't play nice with an SMP kernel. Now, it seems, I'm a walking, cursing example of the issue.

I don't mind, though -- I'm playing Oolite at full speed again, so I'm happy.
