Why I'm Afraid of Flying

I'm happy to admit it -- I have a fear of flying. Strangely enough, though, my anxiety levels peak somewhere between 3 hours and 30 minutes before the plane takes off. Once we depart the terminal building, I'm fine -- the takeoff, cruise, and landing hold no fear for me, in fact I rather enjoy it. When I have the money and time, I plan on learning to do it for myself.

The thing that does freak me out, though, is aptly described in this article. The idea that I could possibly suffer a similar fate, or worse, concerns me. The arbitrary nature of security screenings, and the fact that I cannot, through my own actions, ensure that I will not suffer at the hands of a security service when I have done nothing wrong really scares me.
